The Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) provides near real-time access to production data for University of Minnesota departments and applications.

OIT has designed an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) to address customer needs for real-time, enterprise data. The ESB provides a flexible, standards-driven framework for services and messaging. Sitting between customers and enterprise data, the ESB abstracts the source of the data and returns data in a system independent way; customers need not know the exact source of the data in order to use it.

Business Goal
The initial business goal is to abstract real-time data access to PeopleSoft for many of the same customers who currently use ODS or Data Warehouse to obtain enterprise data. Creating an abstract layer between the end-users and PeopleSoft has many benefits including security control, throttling (to avoid overwhelming PeopleSoft directly), quality control (insulates enterprise systems from poorly constructed queries), and the ability to provide data in a standard, language, and system independent way.
